Olympic Medalist, Dr Ronnie Delany and Sarcoidosis patient Deirdre Martin from Tullamore were on hand at the launch of ‘Love your Lungs’, a new campaign by the Irish Lung Health Alliance, to encourage people to take care of their lungs. The alliance, which comprises the Alpha One Foundation, the Irish Thoracic Society, the Cystic Fibrosis Association of Ireland, the Irish Lung Fibrosis Association, Ben Bulben COPD Support Group, the Irish Sleep Apnoea Trust, the Asthma Society of Ireland, the Irish Cancer Society and the Irish Sarcoidosis Network, has united officially today, ahead of Valentine’s Day, to launch the ‘Love Your Lungs’ campaign.

Front page of the Metro Herald carried another one of my pics this morning unfortunatly with an incorrrect byline, but it's in that the main thing.

Great fun was had yesterday at the launch of the 25th annual Daffodil Day, the Irish Cancer Society and Dell, lead partner for Daffodil Day, called on the public to help raise the ambitious fundraising target of €3.5m for this year’s campaign. Daffodil Day will take place on Friday 23rd March with all money raised going to support the Irish Cancer Society’s free patient care services – the demand for which increased significantly in 2011. The legend that is Christopher Lee was in Dublin last night to receive a honorary membership of the UCD Law Society. He spoke fondly of his connections with Ireland and especially working with Colin Farrell a few years ago, even though his seen was cut from the film. His frail and tired posture seemed to perk up as questions of Tolkien and Saruman from the younger members of the audience, were put to him. But on the birthday of Bram Stoker there was no getting away from the inevitable questions on his most iconic role as Count Dracula. The audience including myself seemed to fall under a spell as his baritone voice filled the room.

1:30pm and as snoozing sales men and taxi drivers shock themselfs off after some dahboard cusine and got ready to get back to the daily grind, Piercing the horizon was a pillar of white as the S/S Statsraad Lehmkuhl approached the Irish coast. Laden down with a full camera bag I hicked out to the Dublin bay landmark of Poolbeg Lighthouse, only to watch in horror as the ship dissapered behind Houth head. After a quick call to the Dublin Port Authoity I decided to wait out as the ship was not docking in Dublin untill 4pm. After spending three hours at poolbeg lighthouse eventually the sleek white lady mad her grand entrance into the port.

The Norwegian tall ship Statsraad Lehmkuhl is pictured passing Poolbeg Lighthouse as it sails into Dublin bay giving us some idea of what to expect next year as Dublin becomes the final port of call for the Tall Ships Races 2012. Pic Andres Poveda

The Statsraad Lehmkuhl is a three-masted barque rigged sail training vessel based in Bergen, Norway serving as a school ship for the Royal Norwegian Navy.

It was built in 1914 as a school training ship for the German merchant marine under the name Grossherzog Friedrich August. After the First World War the ship was taken as a prize by the United Kingdom and in 1921 the ship was bought by former cabinet minister Kristoffer Lehmkuhl (hence the name, which means 'Cabinet Minister Lehmkuhl'). With the exception of the Second World War, when she was captured by German troops and called Westwärts, the ship has belonged to Bergens Skoleskib until it was donated to the Foundation in 1978.

alt country acts from both sides of the Atlantic were bashing out all kinds of roots and Americana
goodness. Last years lineup included the magnificent I Draw Slow, the Oxo Boys, The Big Muddy, B & the Honeyboys, the Niall Toner Band , Al O’Donnell, Phelim Drew, and a washboard master-class from world-renowned player Wayne Waits from Columbus, Ohio.

This July 29-Aug1st is going to be bigger and better more and bigger act such as Mundy, Luan Parle, more venues and music on the street and in The Burnaby park.

After a glorious morning in Trinity College shooting the Medical Commencements (Graduations to you and me) the sun followed me all the way down the N11 to Wicklow town but just as I arrived at the registry office the heavens opened. As storm clouds gathered over the east coast Lindsey & Rob exchanged their vows and refused to allow the weather dampen their day. We scrapped our plans to visit the Phoenix Park and go straight to the landmark establishment of the Anglers Rest in the Strawberry Beds on Knockmaroon Hill at Chapelizod.

As a wedding venue this is one of Dublin's hidden gems. The rooms upstairs lend themselves to a relaxed and intimate reception. The Wrights Angler's Rest is part of the Wright Bar Group which also includes Wrights Cafe Bar in Swords and The Bloody Stream and Findlaters in Howth. Named as the best food pub at the Licensing World Bar Awards 2010, it's menu is both impressive and value for money with an Early Bird menu Mon-Sat from 4 to 7 starting at €15.95 foe 2 courses.

I call this the Narnia wedding. Janice & Jason were transported to another world inside the National Garden Exhibition Centre Kilquade where a fantasy world managed to creep into their lives for this very special day. The rain clouds seemed to separate over Wicklow as we drove down the N11 and the sun bathed Kilqaude in a warm glow as we arrived for what was supposed to be quick stop. I managed to get completely wrapped up in the shoot that life just went on pause. When we finally managed to make our way back through the gateway of reality it was on Newtownmountkennedy. Janice and Jason were greeted by the warm and friendly staff of the Parkveiw Hotel. On speaking to them after they could not have recommended the hotel enough.

What a day, thats all I can say. Thanks to Debbie and Kevin and all their family for a great day. These people can show you what the true meaning of the word family is. Everybody chipped in and with Debbie firmly at the reigns the day went great (except for Debbie loosing her garter on the alter). You could have blown the locals of Jobstown over with a feather when they seen the most opulent horse and carriage making its way up to St Aidan's Church in Tallaght. Then the newly wed lord Kevin and lady Debbie made their way to the City West hotel in Saggart.

I have the pleasure of knowing Eleanor through my commercial work with the Irish Cancer Society and was delighted when she asked me to photograph her big day. We kicked off the day in her beautiful family home in Rathgar, then on to the very special University Church St Stephen's Green. This is one of Dublin hidden gems, a must see if you have a spare 10 minutes when around the green. Following the ceremony we paid a visit to St Stephen's green and then on to the Leixlip Manor and Gardens. Surrounded by 27 acres of Parkland amongst ancient trees, manicured lawns and a magnificent Victorian walled garden, the Leixlip Manor and Gardens is one of the most impressive exclusive wedding venues I have had the pleasure of working in. The staff were extremely helpful and efficient and would seem to have a great grasp for the attention to detail that most couples require from their host.

I think that Jen & Rob had to be the youngest couple that I have seen married in years. Even the priest on the day remarked on how few young couples are wed these days. The day was filled with a lovely sense of two families coming together to make one very special occasion for a young couple who are quite obviously very much in love. The wedding ceremony was held in Johnstown Parish church Kiliney and then on to vale of Avoca, one of Ireland’s most beautiful locations and the Woodenbridge hotel and lodge. Established in 1608, Woodenbridge hotel is the oldest hotel in Ireland, overlooking the vale of Avoca and the amazing Woodenbridge golf club. Thanks again to Jen & Rob for a great day and to Robs brother for providing some well appointed comedy value to the proceedings.

Monday 18th April 2011, The LINC (Learning and Innovation Centre), ITB (Institute of Technology Blanchardstown). As the 2010 cohort of the M50 Enterprise Platform Programme 2010 draws to a close, the LINC offered the participants a golden opportunity, to pitch their businesses to a panel of experienced businesses investors.

Having spent a year at the LINC honing their business skills and progressing with their business plans, whilst receiving invaluable mentoring and training from The LINC, some of Ireland’s best emerging start-up companies are now ready to enter the dragons den world of pitching for investment. The panel of investors at the LINC today included;

Amongst the companies pitching were Safefood 360, a cutting edge food safety compliance software company, who launched in April. Speaking after his pitch, George Howlett, Chief Operations Officer, Safefood 360 said of the opportunity “It was great to have the opportunity to present Safefood 360 to a panel of experienced and insightful investors. Their interest was encouraging and their feedback valued, particularly as we are now seeing to raise second round funding.”

The M50 Enterprise Platform Programme (M50 EPP) is a one year practically focussed enterprise support programme aimed at entrepreneurs who are in the early stages of starting up their own high potential, knowledge intensive businesses. There are twelve places in total being filled this year with the names of the successful companies being announced in the coming weeks.

Martin Scully, Oyster Capital Partners, speaking about what VC's are looking for in a pitch: "Tell us the business problem you are solving and how your solution will address it, how much you think the customer will pay and how you propose to target the market. What is most appealing is a disruptive technology which can be fully developed on an ongoing basis. We want to contribute to the roll-out of a global sales organisation which typically means heading straight to the US market."

The M50 EPP is about to launch it’s 2011 in late April and were inundated with applications. “The programme at the LINC is in high demand,” said Claire Mac Namee, Enterprise Manager “Companies that come on our programme have the benefit of top class mentors in all areas of new business development which really helps them accelerate their businesses forward at a rapid pace. They also benefit from basing their companies at the LINC and availing of all of the professional facilities that we have in place. The difficult job we had this year of shortlisting applications is testament to the wonderful creativity and innovation capabilities of the business people in Ireland at the moment. We are very excited about working with the twelve companies chosen and look forward to revealing their identity in the coming weeks.”

Every Nationality under the sun visited the storehouse to sample the best of Guinness and also the best of Irish hospitality and food. O yes food, wild Irish smoked salmon served on Guinness brown bread, Guinness Stew and lots of other culinary delights inspired by the most famous of Irish Stout. Two little tips for those of you who hand over disks of images to your clients;
1 make sure you have your images copyrighted in the image IPTC metadata
2 the client understands that you retain copyright but they have a limited use of the images (limited to their personal needs or to the need of the the commissioning company).

Far to often photographers just hand over their images to PR & Press agencies without any thought for the future value of the images. Don't assume your client knows the copyright laws.
